Española Island

Location and geography

Española Island is at the extreme southeast of the Galapagos archipelago. It covers an area of 23 square miles. The highest point on the island reaches 675.6 feet.

The area is flat with small hills dotting the landscape. Geologists found signs of volcanic activity here in the 1980s, hinting at its geological past.

Suarez Point

Ideal for spotting blue-footed boobies, albatrosses, and Nazca boobies. Features a magnificent blowhole that spouts water high into the air. Possible activities include a hike of 1.9 miles (3 km). Type of landing: Dry landing. Difficulty level: Difficult.

Osborn Islet

This is a small island southeast of Española Island. Ideal for snorkeling and swimming. Type of landing: No landing. Difficulty level: Easy.

Gardner Bay

Located on the eastern side of Española Island. Home to nearly all 12,000 pairs of waved albatrosses in the world. Possible activities: Snorkeling, dinghy rides, kayaking, and a short hike of 0.6 miles (1 km). Type of landing: Wet landing. Difficulty level: Easy.

Waved Albatross:Only breeds here. Huge wingspan over 7 feet.
Marine Iguanas: Found basking on the rocks.
Lava Lizards: These small creatures run fast on land.

Dark-billed Cuckoo: Brown bird found in forests.

Hammerhead Shark: Famous for its hammer-shaped head.
Galapagos Fur Seal: Rest on rocky shores during the day.
Galapagos Sea Lion: Playful and often seen sunbathing.
