Galápagos Hawk — The Only Raptor That Rules the Archipelago

The Galápagos hawk (Buteo galapagoensis) is the only endemic bird of prey in the Galápagos and the apex aerial predator of the archipelago. Classified as Vulnerable with approximately 150 breeding pairs, it is found on uninhabited islands where introduced species have not eliminated it. Its tameness around humans is unmatched among wild raptors.

The Tamest Raptor on Earth

Stand at Suárez Point on Española island and a Galápagos hawk will likely land within arm’s reach before you have adjusted your camera settings. It is not injured. It is not habituated to feeding. It simply has no inherited fear of large terrestrial animals — because no large terrestrial predators have ever existed in the Galápagos. For this hawk, a human being with a telephoto lens is nothing more than an interesting rock.

This behavioural oddity is one of the most striking things you will ever witness in a wildlife encounter. The bird lands on a trail marker ten centimetres from your boot. It turns its head sideways, assessing you with one eye. It does not flush. If you sit still long enough, it may step onto your knee. This is not domestication — it is evolution in a predator vacuum.

Charles Darwin noted a version of this when he visited the islands in 1835. The animals of the Galápagos, he observed, showed a remarkable indifference to human presence. The hawk exemplifies this better than any other vertebrate in the archipelago. Where a red-tailed hawk in North America has ten thousand years of persecution encoding a flight response at 200 metres, the Galápagos hawk has no such memory. It never needed one.

This tameness, however, is the same quality that makes the species ecologically fragile. A bird that does not flee from humans also does not flee from introduced dogs — or cats — and that has contributed directly to the local extinction of hawk populations on inhabited islands. The extraordinary encounter you can have at Suárez Point is inseparable from the conservation story of this bird.

A Raptor That Eats Almost Anything

The Galápagos hawk is among the most opportunistic raptors on Earth. Its diet reflects the unusual ecology of an island system — prey that elsewhere would not appear on a hawk’s menu becomes a staple when it is abundant enough.

Documented prey and food sources include:

  • Lava lizards — the most common prey item on most islands
  • Land iguana hatchlings and juveniles
  • Marine iguana hatchlings — a seasonal bounty at hatching sites
  • Small birds (finches, mockingbirds, storm petrels)
  • Insects and large centipedes
  • Sea lion afterbirth and placenta — scavenged at breeding colonies
  • Carrion from any source
  • Galápagos tortoises — not killed, but hawks are documented following tortoises over long periods, waiting for them to die

That last behaviour is worth dwelling on. The Galápagos giant tortoise can live for well over a century. A hawk following a tortoise has presumably done the same calculus that game birds do with large herbivores — proximity equals eventual access to a meal. It is patience at an almost geological scale.

The hawk also hunts on the ground, walking through low vegetation in pursuit of lizards. This is uncommon for a Buteo — the genus is typically a soaring hunter, stooping on prey from height. The Galápagos hawk does both: it soars thermal columns looking for targets, stoops with precision, and when soaring is unproductive, it hunts on foot. Adaptability is built into its ecology.

Cooperative Polyandry — An Unusual Mating System

The Galápagos hawk practises cooperative polyandry: a single female maintains a territory and mates with multiple males — documented groups range from 2 to 8 males per female territory. All males in the group cooperate in incubating the eggs and raising the chicks. The female does not exclusively pair-bond with a single mate.

This makes the Galápagos hawk one of a small number of raptor species globally — and the most accessible example — that practices true cooperative polyandry as a stable, recurring reproductive strategy, rather than an occasional anomaly. The evolutionary logic is still debated, but the leading hypothesis involves low population density: in an island system with limited prey and constrained territory, multiple males sharing one productive female territory may produce more surviving offspring than each male attempting to hold and defend a separate territory alone.

In practice, all males in the group incubate the clutch of 1–3 eggs. All males provision the nest and guard the chicks. The female is dominant within the group and determines territorial boundaries.

What this means for an observer is that a nest site may have three or four large dark hawks clustered within a few metres of each other — a sight unusual for any raptor. For a birder accustomed to the fierce territorial aggression of temperate hawks, the cooperative behaviour of a Galápagos hawk group is genuinely surprising.

Honest caveat: the full range of variation in group size and the precise conditions under which groups form and dissolve are not yet completely characterised in the literature. The broad fact of polyandry is well-established; the fine details are still being studied.

Threats and Conservation

With approximately 150 breeding pairs across all islands, the Galápagos hawk has one of the smallest total population sizes of any raptor species. At that scale, a single localised event — a disease outbreak, a successful invasive predator establishment, a volcanic eruption on a key island — could eliminate a meaningful fraction of the global population.

Introduced Species

Introduced rats kill eggs and small chicks. Feral cats and dogs kill juvenile hawks before they fledge. On inhabited islands these pressures proved insurmountable — the hawk populations on Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal, and Floreana are gone or functionally extinct. On uninhabited islands where eradication programmes have been completed or are ongoing — notably Santiago, where rats and goats were eradicated in a landmark multi-year operation — hawk populations are more stable.

Current Conservation

There is no active captive breeding programme for the Galápagos hawk. Conservation relies on in-situ protection: the Galápagos National Park Service (GNPS) monitors breeding pairs, the Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF) conducts ongoing ecological research, and the eradication of introduced species on uninhabited islands remains the most effective intervention available. The IUCN classification is Vulnerable — a species under pressure, not yet Endangered, but with limited margin for further population loss.

The hawk’s tameness, which makes it vulnerable to dogs and cats, also makes it a compelling conservation ambassador. No other wild raptor on Earth gives visitors this quality of encounter — and that encounter creates the kind of emotional bond that drives support for the conservation of the entire archipelago.
