One Island, One Species
There are approximately 12,000 breeding pairs of waved albatross in the world. Every single one of them nests on Española Island. Not most of them. Not the majority. All of them. This is a biological fact of extraordinary strangeness — a species whose entire future hangs on a single volcanic island in the southern Galápagos, measuring roughly 60 square kilometres of scrub and lava at the edge of the Pacific.
When you land at Suárez Point and walk the main trail in the breeding season, the scale registers slowly. At first you notice one bird, then another, then a pair engaged in the courtship ritual you have read about. Then you realise the ground on either side of the trail is covered with them — adults incubating eggs, chicks in various stages of growth, pairs calling to each other in the distinctive braying honk that carries across the colony. The smell arrives before you fully process the sight: a strong, specific combination of guano and regurgitated fish. Travel writers tend to skip this detail. Travelers remember it. It is the smell of 12,000 breeding pairs and their offspring existing in concentrated proximity, and it is real.
The biological term for this kind of concentration is population bottleneck risk. Conservation biologists use the phrase ‘all eggs in one basket’ — and for the waved albatross, the metaphor is literal. A single catastrophic event on Española — an introduced predator that became established, a sustained El Niño that hit at precisely the wrong moment of the breeding cycle, a disease moving through the colony — could end this species in one season. The Critically Endangered listing reflects not only the population pressures the birds face at sea, but this irreducible geographic vulnerability.
The tension at Suárez Point is that the spectacle obscures the fragility. The colony looks abundant. It is, in relative terms, the healthiest it can be — the Galápagos National Park Service manages access, feral goats were eradicated from Española in 1978, and the nesting habitat has largely recovered. But population trend data from monitored plots on Española shows long-term decline. What you are watching when you watch the display is not stability. It is a species doing exactly what it evolved to do, on the last island where it can do it.
