Waved Albatross — The Entire World Population Nests on One Island

The waved albatross (Phoebastria irrorata) is the largest bird in the Galápagos, with a wingspan of up to 240 cm. Classified as Critically Endangered, its entire breeding population — approximately 12,000 pairs — nests exclusively on Española Island from April to December. The birds are completely absent from January through March.

One Island, One Species

There are approximately 12,000 breeding pairs of waved albatross in the world. Every single one of them nests on Española Island. Not most of them. Not the majority. All of them. This is a biological fact of extraordinary strangeness — a species whose entire future hangs on a single volcanic island in the southern Galápagos, measuring roughly 60 square kilometres of scrub and lava at the edge of the Pacific.

When you land at Suárez Point and walk the main trail in the breeding season, the scale registers slowly. At first you notice one bird, then another, then a pair engaged in the courtship ritual you have read about. Then you realise the ground on either side of the trail is covered with them — adults incubating eggs, chicks in various stages of growth, pairs calling to each other in the distinctive braying honk that carries across the colony. The smell arrives before you fully process the sight: a strong, specific combination of guano and regurgitated fish. Travel writers tend to skip this detail. Travelers remember it. It is the smell of 12,000 breeding pairs and their offspring existing in concentrated proximity, and it is real.

The biological term for this kind of concentration is population bottleneck risk. Conservation biologists use the phrase ‘all eggs in one basket’ — and for the waved albatross, the metaphor is literal. A single catastrophic event on Española — an introduced predator that became established, a sustained El Niño that hit at precisely the wrong moment of the breeding cycle, a disease moving through the colony — could end this species in one season. The Critically Endangered listing reflects not only the population pressures the birds face at sea, but this irreducible geographic vulnerability.

The tension at Suárez Point is that the spectacle obscures the fragility. The colony looks abundant. It is, in relative terms, the healthiest it can be — the Galápagos National Park Service manages access, feral goats were eradicated from Española in 1978, and the nesting habitat has largely recovered. But population trend data from monitored plots on Española shows long-term decline. What you are watching when you watch the display is not stability. It is a species doing exactly what it evolved to do, on the last island where it can do it.

The Courtship Display

The waved albatross performs the most elaborate courtship display of any bird in the Galápagos archipelago, and one of the most complex in the world. The full sequence is not a single act but a structured ritual with identifiable components, performed in order, that can run for thirty minutes or more between a committed pair.

Sky-pointing is the most visually arresting element: one bird raises its bill vertically toward the sky, neck fully extended, while emitting a long, exhalatory call. The posture signals readiness for engagement and functions as both invitation and advertisement. Bill circling follows — the two birds face each other at close range and execute rapid, figure-eight rotations of their bills, the movement so fast that the yellow bills become a blur, accompanied by the loud, rhythmic clacking that defines the colony’s soundscape. This is the mechanical heart of the display, and it demands precise coordination.

The waddling dance comes next. Both birds move in a synchronized waddle, stepping toward and away from each other in a pattern that appears almost choreographed. It is clumsy and magnificent simultaneously. Mutual preening — each bird running its bill through the other’s neck and head feathers — closes the sequence. In first-year courting pairs, the full ritual functions as an extended audition; birds learn each other’s timing, tolerances, and signals over multiple seasons before committing to breeding.

In established pairs, the display is a reunion. Waved albatrosses are monogamous and bond for life. Each April, after two to three months alone in the Humboldt Current, individual birds return to Española and relocate their partner. The display is performed again — the full sequence, the sky-point, the bill circling, the waddle — not because the bond needs renewing but because it is what these birds do. After years of separation and reunion, they still run the entire ritual. On the Suárez Point trail, visitors walking slowly and quietly can observe multiple pairs at different stages simultaneously. The displays visible in April are genuinely different from those in October; breeding pairs become more efficient, the timing tighter, the preening longer.

Life at Sea

From January through March, Española Island is empty of waved albatrosses. Every adult and sub-adult has dispersed to the open ocean — specifically to the productive upwelling waters of the Humboldt Current along the coasts of Peru and Ecuador. This is where the birds live for roughly a quarter of every year, doing the one thing the land-based breeding season does not show: travelling vast distances across open water.

Waved albatrosses are masters of dynamic soaring — a flight technique that extracts energy from the wind gradient just above the ocean surface. The bird descends toward the water, accelerating as it moves into the faster-moving air mass above, then turns and climbs, banking into the headwind that slows it before the next descent. Done correctly, the bird covers enormous distances with negligible muscle effort. Satellite tracking of breeding adults during incubation and chick-rearing periods confirms regular trips to the Peruvian continental shelf — hundreds of kilometres from Española — and back, fuelled almost entirely by wind.

The birds feed by surface-seizing and shallow plunging. Their diet at sea consists primarily of fish, squid, and crustaceans. Breeding birds congregate near fishing vessels, which concentrate prey — a behavior that evolved when fishing vessels were a predictable source of discarded bycatch. It is also the behavior that kills them.

Longline fishing in Peruvian and Ecuadorian waters is the primary cause of the waved albatross being Critically Endangered. Longlines deploy thousands of baited hooks across tens of kilometres of water. Albatrosses follow the vessels and strike at the bait as the lines are set. The hook catches in the throat or bill, the bird is pulled underwater by the sinking line, and it drowns. Artisanal fishing fleets in the region catch significant numbers — in some cases, apparently, both accidentally and intentionally. Industrial longlining within the Galápagos Marine Reserve is banned, but this regulation provides no protection once the birds leave Galápagos waters, which they must do to feed. A bird that successfully incubated an egg on Española, raised a chick through 167 days of development, and survived every threat the islands could present, can be dead on a longline hook within a month of fledging season. That is where the population trend data goes.

Why It Is Critically Endangered

The Critically Endangered listing reflects a convergence of threats — no single factor operating alone would necessarily push this species to the edge. Together, they do.

Longline Fishing Bycatch

This is the primary driver of population decline. The waved albatross’s foraging range overlaps heavily with industrial and artisanal longline fishing activity in the southeastern Pacific. The Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP) identifies longline bycatch as the critical threat. Reducing mortality requires binding international fishing agreements that cover both industrial fleets and the smaller artisanal operations along the Peruvian and Ecuadorian coasts — neither of which has been comprehensively achieved.

Plastic Ingestion

Approximately 45% of all plastic used along the Pacific coastline of South and Central America is inadequately managed, releasing roughly one million tonnes of plastic per year into the ocean. Albatrosses mistake floating plastic for prey. Adults can ingest it directly; they can also feed plastic fragments to chicks during regurgitation feeding. The Galápagos Conservation Trust’s research on plastic ingestion in waved albatrosses is ongoing, and the full scale of the impact is not yet quantified.

El Niño Prey Disruption

The Humboldt Current upwelling that supports the albatross’s prey base weakens dramatically during El Niño events. Breeding success on Española dropped to 7.9% in 2003 — a strong El Niño year — compared to years when it exceeds 35%. Climate projections suggest increasing frequency and intensity of El Niño events. When prey availability collapses in the birds’ primary foraging area, breeding success collapses with it.

Single-Colony Vulnerability

The concentration of the entire breeding population on one island, described above, magnifies all other threats. A longline mortality event that removes a percentage of adults from a geographically dispersed population is a setback. For a species where every breeding adult uses a single island, the same percentage loss is a crisis.

Conservation Response

The Galápagos National Park Service manages access to Española and protects nesting habitat. BirdLife International tracks population trends under its Albatross Task Force framework. ACAP coordinates international bycatch mitigation. Honest assessment: the conservation response at the nesting site is effective. The conservation response to marine bycatch is insufficient. The birds continue to die on hooks in waters outside the protected archipelago.

The waved albatross breeding cycle on Española runs from April through December, synchronized with the availability of prey in the Galápagos waters and the onset of the southeast trade winds that support dynamic soaring over the Humboldt Current feeding grounds.

Where and How to See Them

The waved albatross can be seen on land in exactly one place: Española Island (also called Hood Island), specifically at Suárez Point on the island’s western coast. The trail at Suárez Point is one of the most extraordinary walking experiences in the Galápagos — the path passes directly through the active colony, with nesting birds, displaying pairs, and developing chicks visible at arm’s length on either side. The birds are fully habituated to human presence and do not flush from the trail.

The scale of the colony, the sound, the smell, the absurdity of the waddling display performed two feet from the trail by a bird with a two-metre wingspan: none of it lands properly in a photograph. You need to be standing in it.

To see them, your itinerary must include Española Island between April and December. That is the whole of the planning logic. Everything else — which boat, which cabin tier, how many days — is secondary to that one constraint.

When is the best time to see the waved albatross?

April through November is the optimal window, with the widest range of behaviors visible. April and May offer peak courtship displays. August through October offer active chick-rearing. The single most important thing to know: January through March, there are no waved albatrosses on Española. The island is completely empty of this species during those three months. If your cruise lands on Española between January and March, you will not see a waved albatross.

Can I see waved albatrosses anywhere other than Española?

Almost never on land. A very small number of birds — fewer than 30 in any given year — have been recorded at Isla de la Plata off the Ecuadorian mainland coast, though breeding success there is negligible and presence is irregular. A single egg was recorded on Genovesa Island in 2006 but did not hatch. For all practical purposes, if you want to see a waved albatross on land, Española is the only answer. At sea, the birds range through Ecuadorian and Peruvian waters January–March, but you would need to be far offshore on a vessel in the right area — not a realistic visitor option.

Why is the waved albatross Critically Endangered?

The primary cause is longline fishing bycatch in the Peruvian and Ecuadorian waters where the birds feed between January and March. Albatrosses follow fishing vessels and strike at baited hooks being set on longlines; the hook catches in the bill or throat and the bird drowns as the line sinks. Secondary factors include plastic ingestion from Pacific marine debris and prey collapse during El Niño events. The single-colony geography amplifies all threats: there is no redundancy in the population if something goes wrong on Española.

How long do waved albatrosses live?

Average lifespan is approximately 30 years. Albatrosses in general are long-lived seabirds — some species exceed 60 years — but the waved albatross’s lifespan data reflects the mortality pressure from bycatch. Adult survival rates in non-El Niño years run around 92–93%; in strong El Niño years (such as 2002–2003), that figure dropped to approximately 86%. These are not abstract statistics: for a species with a delayed breeding age (most birds do not begin breeding until age six), the loss of mature adults is exceptionally difficult to recover from.

What does the courtship display look like?
