Galápagos Shark (Carcharhinus galapagensis)
The species that gives the islands their claim on the shark world is also the most visible. The Galápagos shark (Carcharhinus galapagensis) is a large, grey-brown requiem shark that reaches up to approximately 3.3 metres in length and is broadly distributed across the world’s remote oceanic islands — but it is nowhere more reliably seen than here, in the waters that bear its name.
Behaviourally, it is one of the most inquisitive sharks a diver will encounter. Where populations are dense, individuals will approach divers closely and persistently. This is not aggression — it is curiosity, and experienced guides manage it as such. However, the species has been recorded displaying pre-attack posturing (arched back, lowered pectoral fins) and, in rare circumstances, has been implicated in incidents involving spearfishing or the presence of fish blood in the water. Standard dive protocol — calm movement, no spearfishing, no feeding — is entirely sufficient.
Juveniles are typically confined to waters shallower than 25 metres, where they are less vulnerable to cannibalism by adults. Adults form loose aggregations, often swimming just above the substrate, and are found throughout the archipelago on coral and rocky reef habitats. IUCN status: Least Concern (global population, 2018 assessment).
WHERE TO SEE IT: Virtually all dive and snorkel sites across the archipelago offer Galápagos shark sightings. Particularly reliable: Gordon Rocks, Kicker Rock, Cape Marshall (Isabela), and the northern islands of Darwin and Wolf.
Whitetip Reef Shark (Triaenodon obesus)
The whitetip reef shark is the animal most snorkellers in the Galápagos are most likely to encounter face to face — because it is the one most likely to be lying perfectly still on a sandy patch beneath them. Unlike most sharks, which must keep moving to breathe, whitetips can pump water across their gills and rest motionless on the reef bottom for extended periods. This behaviour makes them one of the most photogenic and accessible sharks in the world.
They are slender, reaching a maximum length of around 2.1 metres, and distinguished by the white tips on their first dorsal and caudal fins. Their diet is primarily reef fish and cephalopods, and they are among the most benign sharks a snorkeller can share water with. They are not territorial towards divers.
IUCN status: Vulnerable (global assessment — ). Populations have declined in many parts of their range due to reef degradation and fishing pressure. The Galápagos reserve provides meaningful protection for the resident population.
WHERE TO SEE THEM: Reef dive sites around Santa Cruz (Gordon Rocks, Academy Bay margins), San Cristóbal (Kicker Rock, Punta Pitt), and shallow bays around Isabela. Snorkellers with calm water and a patient guide will frequently see them resting in 3–10 metres of water.
Blacktip Reef Shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus)
The blacktip reef shark occupies shallower water than most of its relatives, often patrolling reef margins and lagoon edges in as little as one to two metres of water. Its black-tipped fins — all of them — are unmistakable. It is a smaller species, typically reaching around 1.8 metres, and is among the most widely distributed reef sharks in the Indo-Pacific and eastern Pacific.
In the Galápagos, blacktips are less abundant than the whitetip reef shark and Galápagos shark, but are reliably present at many sites. Their shallow-water habit means snorkellers occasionally encounter them at the edge of beaches and in sheltered coves. They are not considered a threat to snorkellers or swimmers under normal circumstances.
IUCN status: Vulnerable (2020 global assessment — populations estimated to have declined by up to 49% over the past 44 years due to exploitation and habitat loss). Listed on CITES Appendix II from November 2023.
WHERE TO SEE THEM: Shallow reef margins and sheltered bays throughout the archipelago. Santa Cruz and San Cristóbal inshore reefs are reliable locations.
Scalloped Hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini)
There is a reason experienced divers plan entire itineraries around the scalloped hammerhead. Here, in the Galápagos, they gather in schools — not pairs, not dozens, but sometimes hundreds — turning the blue water column at Darwin and Wolf Islands into one of the most arresting spectacles in natural history. The wide, hammer-shaped cephalofoil that defines the species serves a sensory function: it carries electroreceptors and lateral line sensors that allow the shark to detect prey buried in sand with exceptional precision.
The Galápagos sits at the centre of the scalloped hammerhead’s world in the Eastern Pacific. Research by the Charles Darwin Foundation has found that during the cool season (June–November), up to 90% of monitored individuals remain within the marine reserve — a remarkable concentration driven by the upwelling currents and prey availability. During the warm season (December–May), that figure drops to around 30%, with individuals dispersing more widely and spending more time at depth.
The species is Critically Endangered globally (IUCN, 2019 assessment). Overfishing for the fin trade and incidental bycatch have reduced populations significantly across their range. The Galápagos population is among the best-protected aggregations in the world, but its migratory nature means the reserve alone cannot guarantee the species’ survival.
WHERE TO SEE THEM: Darwin and Wolf Islands are the definitive hammerhead destinations — liveaboard only (approximately 100 km north of Isabela). Accessible sites including Gordon Rocks (Santa Cruz) and Kicker Rock (San Cristóbal) offer encounters year-round, though typically in smaller groups. Snorkel sightings of hammerheads are rare and unpredictable; the species is primarily a diver experience.
Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus)
The whale shark is the largest fish in the ocean — a filter feeder that can reach and sustains itself on plankton, small fish, and fish spawn. Its presence in Galápagos waters is one of the most remarkable findings in contemporary marine biology: the aggregation at Darwin and Wolf Islands is composed predominantly of what appear to be pregnant females — approximately 90% of individuals, according to research by the Galápagos Whale Shark Project and collaborating institutions. No other site in the world shows this pattern consistently.
Why pregnant females aggregate here is still under investigation. The working hypothesis is that the cold, nutrient-rich upwelling creates an exceptional feeding environment during a period of high energetic demand. Where these females give birth remains unknown — despite tagging programmes and the first-ever ultrasound performed on a wild whale shark in Galápagos waters (Galápagos Conservation Trust, 2017).
IUCN status: Endangered (upgraded from Vulnerable — populations estimated to have declined by over 50% globally in the past 75 years). Listed on CITES Appendix II. Threats include bycatch, vessel strikes, marine pollution, and illegal trade in fins, gill plates, and liver oil in some markets.
WHERE TO SEE THEM: Darwin and Wolf Islands, June–October (peak July–September). Accessible by liveaboard only. Occasional sightings have been reported at central island sites but cannot be predicted or relied upon. This is a liveaboard experience.
