Cecilia Guerrero, a Santa Cruz Island resident, is one of the recipients of Galapagos Conservancy’s Women in Sustainable Entrepreneurship Program grants. These grants support initiatives that promote sustainability in Archipelago.
Organically growing food is more important in places like the Galapagos Islands. This is because organic farming significantly reduces the environmental damage to farmland, and human health.
Cecilia, with the support of Galapagos Conservancy is developing organic fertilizers using organic waste from her farm. She is increasing the knowledge of her farm staff and other Santa Cruz Island farmers regarding agro-ecological crop cultivation.Cecilia stressed that farmers want a profitable production but that it must also be financially profitable. We must ensure it is profitable, beneficial for the environment and human health.
Galapagos Conservancy believes it is essential to support and promote organic production in the Archipelago. Pesticide residues and chemical products are scattered in the environment, becoming contaminants for animals, plants and water. This can threaten their stability, as well as the fragile ecosystems of Galapagos Islands.
